\u201cAnora\u201d\u00a0took home the coveted Best Picture award at the 2025 Oscars on Sunday, following a near sweep of the major categories for which it was recognized.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Also winning Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Editing, the dark fairytale\u2019s director Sean Baker took the stage with film\u2019s cast\u00a0 for his acceptance speech, encouraging people to keep making independent film.<\/p>\n

\u201cLong live independent film,\u201d he said to cap the night.<\/p>\n

Minutes before taking the night\u2019s top honor,\u00a0Mikey Madison\u00a0accepted the Best Actress statuette for her performance in the titular role as Anora \u2018Ani\u2019 Mikheeva, a stripper in New York who falls for and marries Russian oligarch, played by Mark Eydelshteyn. After being swept into much wealth, she navigates a family determined to break the couple apart.<\/p>\n

Speaking before Oscar nominations, Madison said being being a part of the awards conversation at all was \u201coverwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that I\u2019m incredibly overjoyed, honored, and humbled that our film is being recognized in this way. But I\u2019m just processing it,\u201d\u00a0Madison told BBC\u00a0. \u201cIt\u2019s overwhelming and amazing, and all of the things,\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the ceremony, Baker\u00a0acknowledged the film\u2019s inspiration\u00a0from the sex worker community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank the sex work community,\u201d Baker said in his acceptance speech. \u201cThey have shared their stories. They have shared their life experiences with me over the years. My deepest respect. I share this with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnora\u201d has been a clear favorite throughout award season, winning a BAFTA, a Critics\u2019 Choice Award, and three Independent Spirit Awards.<\/p>\n

Baker won over the strong field of nominees including \u201cA Complete Unknown,\u201d \u201cEmilia P\u00e9rez,\u201d \u201cThe Substance,\u201d and \u201cThe Brutalist.\u201d<\/p>\n
